Pilgrimage in the footsteps of Olav the Holy

St. Olavsleden

The St. Olavsleden trail that runs from Selånger in Sweden, via Stiklestad and into Trondheim has the status of a European Cultural Route. The stage between Selånger and Stiklestad was the last stage Olav Haraldsson did while he was alive. He was killed in the Battle of Stiklestad on a July evening in 1030. That same night, his dead body was stolen and rowed across the Trondheimsfjord from Verdal past Frostalandet and into Trondheim.

In 2014, a new trail was opened along this fjord, running from Munkeby, through Levanger, Ekne and out to Frosta. From Frosta, the trail goes by sea either to Steinvikholmen or directly to Trondheim. In other words, we cross the same fjord that Olav Haraldsson's army crossed the night after the Battle of Stiklestad.

This is as close as you can get to the history that shaped Norway!
